Overview
The interphone system is used by persons to speak to each other between different aircraft areas.
The inter-phone system transmits communication between pilots, between ground crew members, and between pilots and ground crew members. Pilots connect to the inter-phone system by using audio jacks in the cockpit, and ground crew members connect to the system by using service inter-phone units.
The Control Panel Electronics (CPE) units carry out all processing of the inter-phone audio. The pilots can control their inter-phone audio volume by using their onside ACPs.
Service Inter-phone Unit
The aircraft has two service inter-phone units:
- One in the nose compartment, on the left side at FS242.50 (access to this unit is external to the aircraft, from the communication door)
- One in the aft equipment compartment, on the left side at FS756.25.
The service inter-phone units transmit and receive communications between the flight crew and the ground maintenance crew. The units are communication panels that contain headphone (HDPH) and microphone (MIC) audio jacks.
Audio Jacks
The audio jacks include the headphone and microphone jacks installed in the service inter-phone units.
They also include the headphone and microphone jacks that follow:
- The audio jacks in the pilot control column for the pilot hand microphone
- The audio jacks in the copilot control column for the copilot hand microphone
- The audio jacks in the pilot side console
- The audio jacks in the copilot side console
- The audio jacks, on the maintenance panel, in the LH equipment rack
- When the observer third audio system option is installed, there are another set of audio jacks. They are installed on the observer console panel, in a stowage box (completion center installation) in the passenger compartment area aft of the passenger door.
The microphone audio jacks in the service inter-phone units and the audio jacks in the pilot and copilot control columns have contacts for the Push-To-Talk (PTT) signal. The PTT signal is a discrete that is sent to CPE No. 1 or CPE No. 2 when the applicable microphone PTT switch is pushed.

Operation
The inter-phone system operates when the audio integrating system has power and the applicable switches on the audio control panels (ACPs) are set. Audio inputs from microphones and outputs to the headphones are all processed through the control panel electronics (CPE) units and/or the ACPs. When the audio integrating system operates in the normal mode, all warning audio signals are sent to the flight compartment speakers (at all times). In the normal mode, the warning audio signals are also sent to the headphones. But when the audio integrating system operates in the emergency mode, only VHF system audio is sent to the headphones.
Inter-phone System Interfaces
The inter-phone system has interfaces with the audio integrating system as follows:
- For the audio jacks in the nose compartment:
- Analog audio from the nose-compartment MIC jack is sent to CPE No. 1
- Analog audio at the nose-compartment HDPH jack is received from CPE No. 1
- PTT discrete signal from the nose-compartment MIC jack is sent to CPE No. 1
- For the audio jacks in the aft compartment:
- Analog audio from the aft-compartment MIC jack is sent to CPE No. 1
- Analog audio at the aft-compartment HDPH jack is received from CPE No. 1
- PTT discrete signal from the aft-compartment MIC jack is sent to CPE No. 1
- For the pilot audio jacks:
- Analog audio from the pilot boom MIC and the pilot oxygen mask microphone are sent to CPE No. 1 through ACP No. 1
- Analog audio at the pilot HDPH jack is received from CPE No. 1
- Analog audio from the pilot hand microphone jack is sent to CPE No. 1
- PTT discrete signal from the pilot hand-microphone is sent to CPE No. 1
- For the copilot audio jacks:
- Analog audio from the copilot boom MIC and the copilot oxygen mask microphone are sent to CPE No. 2 through ACP No. 2
- Analog audio at the copilot HDPH jack is received from CPE No. 2
- Analog audio from the copilot hand-microphone jack is sent to CPE No. 2
- PTT discrete signal from the copilot hand-microphone is sent to CPE No. 2
- For the audio jacks on the maintenance panel:
- Analog audio from the MIC is sent to CPE No. 2
- Analog audio at the HDPH is received from CPE No. 2
- For the observer (with the observer third audio system option installed) audio jacks:
- Analog audio from the MIC is sent to CPE No. 3
- Analog audio at the HDPH is received from CPE No. 3
When set, the pilot (copilot) radio transmit switch supplies a discrete signal to CPE No. 1 (CPE No. 2) to enable the inter-phone function (R/T switch set to INPH position) or the radio transmit function (R/T switch set to TX position).
Inter-phone System Controls
The primary control used to set and control the inter-phone system is the INPH on the ACP. Also, the momentary radio-transmit (R/T) switch, located in the pilot/copilot control wheel, can be is used to enable the inter-phone system.
- Inter-phone Selection/Volume Control
- Headphone Volume Control
Inter-phone Selection/Volume Control
When the INPH button on the ACP is in the pushed in position, there is no audio output to the headphones. If the INPH button on the ACP is set to the pulled-out position, it enables the inter-phone function. Also, if the pilot/copilot R/T switch is set and held to the inboard position (INPH selection), the audio from the boom microphone is sent to the inter-phone system only.
When the INPH selection is set, the audio from the active microphone is sent to the headphones in the flight compartment and service inter-phone units. The pilot/copilot/observer turns the INPH button on the ACP, clockwise or counterclockwise, to adjust the volume of the inter-phone audio.
Headphone Volume Control
The pilot, copilot and observer can adjust the audio volume of their applicable headphones with the HDPH button on the ACP.
The audio in the maintenance panel is the same as the copilot. The volume level set for the copilot can be adjusted with the VOLUME button on the maintenance panel. To prevent interference with the air-traffic-control (ATC) communications, the maintenance panel microphone is connected to the CPE inputs used for the service microphones.
All the inter-phone volume controls have no effect on the warning audios.
Note:
When the switch EMER/NORM on the ACP, is set to NORM position, warning audio signals are sent to the flight compartment speakers and also to the headphones. When the EMER/NORM switch is set to the EMER position, only VHF system audio is sent to the headphones.
