In-Flight Binding of the Lavatory to Baggage Compartment Door (Aircraft Equipped with PPI Interiors)
It has been reported that some operators are experiencing in flight binding of the door leading from the lavatory to the baggage compartment. The door can become difficult to open and close at altitude. This is attributed to cabin pressurization and can cause the closing of gaps on some interior components.
Following the procedures below will help you better understand how to micro adjust the door to avoid the binding at the top or bottom of the door.
There is a micro adjustment on the bottom hinge that allows the parallel alignment of the door. The bottom hinge sleeve is drilled off center and is designed to be turned to suit the installation at the opposite bulkhead. i.e. If the door is binding on the top or bottom in flight the adjustment can increase or decrease the gap at the opposite bulkhead without having to remove the door.
Instructions to adjust the door:
- With the door open at ninety degrees, slightly loosen all the screws on the three hinge blocks.
- While the door is still hanging on its hinges, remove the bottom hinge block to expose the sleeve.
- Turn the sleeve until desired gaps are obtained on all four sides of the door. (See Figure 3)
- Re-tighten the blocks.
- If the gaps are not equal restart at step one.
WARNING: Always make sure there is no air gap on the smoke seal at the top or bottom of the door.
