Overview

The function of the central maintenance system is to find and record failures, and to help personnel to find the defective aircraft components.

The maintenance diagnostic computer (MDC) is the primary component of the central maintenance system. The MDC examines and records the diagnostic data from the line replaceable units (LRU). Most LRUs do a self examination and transmit the failure data to the MDC. The MDC collects a maintenance report for each sensed LRU and keeps it in nonvolatile memory. The MDC keeps a record of errors that occurred before or that occur at this time. The MDC gives troubleshooting data to personnel.

The MDC can keep aircraft identification with time and date. The MDC can do a test of LRUs and show rigging procedures for LRUs.

The copilot multi-function display (MFD) shows the different maintenance data pages. The cursor control panel (CCP) changes the copilot MFD mode from its usual display mode to the maintenance-diagnostic display mode. The CCP controls the diagnostics shown on the copilot MFD. The central maintenance system downloads fault data, that it kept, to a diskette/USB memory drive in the data loader or to the portable maintenance access terminal (PMAT).

The central maintenance system has interfaces with the integrated-avionics processor system (IAPS), the flight management system (FMS), and the electronic flight-instrument system (EFIS).
