Overview

The portable fire extinguisher is used to extinguish fires in the flight compartment. The portable fire extinguisher is located in the flight compartment.

Flight Compartment Extinguisher

The extinguisher is on the bulkhead at FS326.00 behind the copilot seat.

The extinguisher weighs 3.5 lb (1.6 kg). A clamp holds the flight compartment extinguisher to a bracket attached to the bulkhead. It is a hand-held fire extinguisher which uses the Halon 1211 as the fire extinguishant.

A pressure gauge on the fire extinguisher indicates pressure in the cylinder.

Operation

The clamp opens easily to remove the extinguisher from the bracket. The lockpin in the discharge lever must be removed to operate the lever. When the lockpin is pulled, the nylon tie breaks. The fire extinguishant is released through the discharge nozzle when the lever is pulled. The nozzle must be pointed at the base of the fire in a side-to-side movement. Extinguishant flow stops if the lever is released.

The Halon vapor is heavier than air and stays above the fire area. It removes oxygen out of a small area to extinguish the fire. The Halon vapor remains in the area a short period (factor of air circulation) until new air replaces it.

The fire extinguisher must be replaced if there is an indication of too much pressure or not sufficient pressure. A partially used or empty fire extinguisher must be replaced as soon as possible.
