Overview
The flight compartment windows have two windshield panels and two side windows. They are installed symmetrically at the center line of the aircraft.
The two isolated panels of the windshield and the side windows in the flight compartment let the crew see sufficiently forward and to the side. The windows give the maximum possible distance for the flight crew to see in all types of environmental conditions.
The windows are made to keep cabin pressurization and to give protection to the flight compartment from weather elements. They also give protection to the internal components in the transparent plies.
The pilot's and copilot's windshield and side window are a plug type and do not attach to each other. An external strap attaches the windshield and side window to a set post. The external strap can be removed from each panel and from the aircraft. The windshield and side windows can be removed and replaced externally from the aircraft.
The windshield and side windows are made to let the flow of air remove water from the outboard surface. The outboard surface of the glass ply has a layer of material which does not let water collect on the surface.
Windshield
The windshield is a bonded structure which includes a molded gasket, outer ply, heating system, outer interlayer, core ply, inner interlayer, and an inner ply. The windshield has an electrical anti-ice, de-fog, and de-mist system.
The windshield has two contours, an inboard contour and an outboard contour. The inboard contour has a U-shape molded gasket on and along the edge of the core and inner ply. The molded gasket is made from silicone rubber and is the section of windshield that engages with the structure. The area between the core ply and inner ply is the inner interlayer. The inner interlayer has an insert along the edges.
The inner ply and core ply are sheets of glass 0.195 in (4.95 mm) thick. An interlayer isolates the two plies. Together, these plies make contour B which is the outer edge of the windshield.
The outboard contour has a molded seal along the edge of the outer ply and interlayer. This molded seal engages with the edge of the molded gasket on the inboard plies.
The outer ply is a glass sheet 0.120 in (3.05 mm) thick. The inboard side of this ply has a heating system and an interlayer that isolates the outer ply from the core ply. The edge of the outer ply makes contour A which is a step up and in from contour B.
The interlayers are layers of sealant that bond and isolate the glass plies. The inner interlayer is 0.080 in (2.03 mm) thick. The outer interlayer is 0.100 in (2.54 mm) thick.
The windshield has a layer of surface seal 0.099 in (2.52 mm) thick. This surface seal is on the full windshield and molded seal.
There is a connection terminal on the inboard side of the windshield for the heating system. The heating system components in the windshield are a sensing element, bus bar, and sensing element wires.
Side-Window
There is a left side window and a right side window in the flight compartment. They are immediately aft of the left and right windshields.
The side window is a bonded structure which includes a molded gasket, outer ply, heating system, outer interlayer, core ply, inner interlayer, and an inner ply.
The side window has a de-fog and a de-mist system.
The side window has two contours, an inboard contour and an outboard contour.
The inboard contour has a U-shape molded gasket on and along the edge of the core and inner ply. The molded gasket is made from silicone rubber and is the section of window that engages with the structure. The area between the core ply and inner ply is the inner interlayer. The inner interlayer has an insert along the edges.
The inner ply and core ply are sheets of glass. The core ply is 0.195 in (4.95 mm) thick. The inner ply is 0.125 in (3.18 mm) thick. An interlayer isolates the two plies. Together, these plies make contour B which is the outer edge of the windshield.
The outboard contour has a molded seal along the edge of the outer ply and interlayer. This molded seal engages with the edge of the molded gasket on the inboard plies.
The outer ply is a glass sheet 0.082 in (2.08 mm) thick.
The side window has a layer of surface seal 0.118 in (3.00 mm) thick. This surface seal is on the full window and molded seal.
There is a connection terminal on the inboard side of the side window for the heating system. The heating system components in the side window are a sensing element, bus bar, and sensing element wires.
