Overview
The extinguishing system supplies the fire extinguishing chemicals to the engines or the auxiliary power unit (APU) through a distribution system controlled in the flight compartment.
The extinguishing system for the engines and APU has two fire extinguishing containers. The containers hold HALON 1301. A distribution system can send the Halon to either engine or the APU. Each container is able to send Halon to any of the three zones. Fire handles in the flight compartment are used to select which zone is armed and which container is selected. A portable fire extinguisher is also available in the flight compartment if a fire occurs there.
There are two fire extinguisher containers in the system. Each fire container has a hermetic seal and has Halon 1301. Each container has three discharge heads. Two of the discharge heads are for the engine discharge lines and the third head is for the APU. The discharge lines send the Halon to the applicable protection zone. There are three fire handles in the flight compartment, one for each engine and one for the APU. These handles select which container will send the Halon to the applicable zone.
In portable fire extinguishers, there is a small portable fire extinguisher available in the flight compartment. It is located on the right side of the flight compartment bulkhead.
