Overview

The flight data recording system receives data for the aircraft flight parameters from the data acquisition unit (DAU) 4 and makes a record for future analysis.

The solid-state flight data recorder (FDR) is a crash-survivable data recorder capable of retaining up to 25 hours of flight data. The handle of the FDR is an underwater locating device (ULD). Data is recorded into non-volatile memory to retain a history of aircraft parameters.

All stored information is retained after removal of electrical power. Data can be recovered from non-volatile memory via the FDR’s front panel using a Honeywell handheld download unit (HHDLU).This data can be read and analyzed using the Aircraft Data Recovery and Analysis Software (ADRAS) from Honeywell.

All Global aircraft operating under FAR Part 135 (or equivalent), carrying 10 or more passengers and manufactured after August 19, 2002 require additional aircraft parameters to be monitored and recorded. SB 700-31-020 incorporates this additional requirement in the aircraft starting with serial no. 9119.

Flight Data Recorder

The FDR is a solid-state flight data-recorder (SSFDR) that monitors and records real-time flight data in its non-volatile memory. Data can be retrieved or downloaded through the front connector of the FDR. The FDR is specially made to be resistant to shocks and heat related with an aircraft crash. The recorded aircraft data is thus available for examination after an accident.

The FDR is located in the aft equipment compartment at FS1095 RHS. The FDR stores 25 hours of data in a solid-state memory. The FDR is a Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) and it includes four shop replaceable units (SRUs).

The SRUs are:

  • Interface and Controller Board (ICB)
  • Power Supply (PS)
  • Crash-Survivable Memory Unit (CSMU)
  • Underwater Locator Device (ULD)

Overview

The crash-survivable memory unit is enclosed in a heat shield and stainless steel package which protects it from shock and thermal damage. The FDR records all mandatory, additional, and optional parameters. The majority of data being recorded from the following systems:

  • ATA 34 (navigation)
  • ATA 72 (power plant)
  • ATA 22 (auto flight)
  • ATA 27 (flight control)
  • ATA 31 (indicating and recording)

The data may be retrieved for analysis via an RS 422 serial link through the front panel connector using an HHDLU. The FDR records the parameters that follow:

Data can be retrieved from the FDR with a ground support equipment (GSE) or ground based equipment (GBE) which is the hand held download unit (HHDLU). Data is downloaded through RS-422 communications link connected to the ATE connector on the front panel of the SSFDR.

Underwater Locator Device

The underwater locator device (ULD) is a battery-operated, underwater acoustic pulse-generator. The ULD operates when it is in water. The ULD is installed on the front of the FDR.

The ULD is mounted on the front of the recorder and also serves as a handle. Four mounting bolts firmly attach the ULD directly to the front of the crash survivable memory unit (CSMU) to avoid separation in the event of a crash. The ULD contains an acoustic beacon, a battery, and a water-activated switch. When water shorts the switch contacts, the beacon activates and transmits pulses on an ultrasonic frequency. The ULD battery has a life time limit and must be replaced by the labeled expiry date.

The ULD’s operating frequency is 37.5 kHz at one pulse per second with a pulse length of 10 msec. Depending on the model, the ULD will operate for 30 days or 90 days.

The ULD has a water switch, a battery, an oscillator, and a transducer. When the water switch is wet, the battery supplies power to the oscillator. The oscillator causes the transducer to send out a 37.5 kHz signal. The signal is transmitted for 30 days or 90 days at a range of 2,000 to 4,000 yards (1,800 to 3,600 m).

Overview

Handheld Download Unit (HHDLU)

The HHDLU is a portable tool used to download the SSFDR recording via a RS 422 interface. The HHDLU connects to the front connector of the SSFDR. The downloaded data is stored on a removable PC memory card. The PC memory card allows the downloaded data to be easily transferred to PC for analysis. Four entry keys control the operation and a four-line display indicates progress.

Overview

3-Axis High-G Accelerometer

The high-G accelerometer is located in the left main-gear-landing wheel well at FS723.

Overview

The triaxial accelerometer (high-G accelerometer) is a sealed instrument and contains three isolated pendulum sensors for 3 orthogonal axes. Each sensor measures acceleration (force) along its axis. The 3 axes with their force ranges are as follows:

  • Longitudinal axis (fwd/aft direction) (+1g/-1g)
  • Lateral axis (left/right direction) (-1g/+1g)
  • Vertical axis (up/down direction) (+6g/-3g)

The accelerometer output goes to DAU 4 before it is supplied to the FDR. A status message shows FDR ACCEL FAIL when the accelerometer is out of tolerance.

Overview

Data Acquisition Unit No. 4

DAU 4 receives normal acceleration analog data from the dedicated 3-axis high-G accelerometer and SSFDR status from the SSFDR. DAU 4 provides data to FDR, and the optional Quick Access Recorder (QAR), at the rate of 128 words per second via ARINC 717 data bus. Date and time synchronization with the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) is also provided by DAU 4. With SB 700-31-020 incorporated the DAU 4 rate has been increased to 256 words per second.

Pilot Event Marker

The pilot event marker is located on the right hand side of landing gear panel.

Overview

This event marker operates for FDR and CAIMS events simultaneously when it is pressed.

In FDR operation, an event signal is sent to the recorder for the purpose of allowing quick data retrieval when the PEM is pressed.

In CAIMS operation, special sets of data are recorded to all members NVM memory when PEM is pressed.

System Operation

The SSFDR enters initialization mode immediately upon application of primary power. The SSFDR initializes and performs a built-in test within 500 milli seconds of the application of power. If the self-test fails, the external BITE amber light on the SSFDR's front panel will be illuminated together with the "FDR FAIL" advisory message displayed on EICAS.

The SSFDR records the data from DAU 4 via the Harvard biphase serial ARINC 717 bus at the rate of 128 words per second (256 words per second with SB 700-31-020 incorporated). Programmed pins of the rear connector are used to identify the data rate expected from DAU 4. If no ARINC 717 data stream is present for more than five seconds, the SSFDR activates the system status flag and stops the recording process. A "FDR FAIL" advisory message will be displayed on the EICAS, however, the SSFDR external BITE light will not be illuminated. The recorder puts a digital stream of data into a solid-state memory module which has a capacity to retain 25 hours of data. When the memory module is full, the oldest data is overwritten. The memory module is enclosed in a heat shield and stainless steel package which protects it from shock and thermal damage.

FDR Mapping Update for Batch 3: The FDR ARINC 717 bus mapping for both the high speed (256 WPS) and the low speed (128 WPS) FDR configurations has been modified to accommodate additional parameters associated with VGP and LPV approaches. VGP has been incorporated into the baseline functionality of the Batch 3 program, and LPV approaches have been included to support the strapable LPV option.

An event marker can be added to the SSFDR memory by pushing the pilot event marker (PEM) on the landing gear panel.

To extract the recorded data without removing the SSFDR from the aircraft, or to monitor the real time parameters as they are recorded, a portable handheld download unit (HHDLU) can be used.

Using the HHDLU, flight data is retrieved from the FDR via an RS 422 serial link at 750 K baud through the front panel connector.

While downloading data via the HHDLU, normal flight recording is inhibited, and the SSFDR status signal indicates a failure.

The downloaded data is stored into a removable PCMCIA memory card, which can be used with the aircraft data recovery and analysis software program (ADRAS) PC-based software program for further analysis

The 3-axis High-G accelerometer provides an analog normal acceleration output to DAU 4 for use by the FDR.

The normal acceleration signal has a range of +3G to − 6G and is provided to the FDR via the ARINC 717 data bus interface with DAU 4. The accelerometer also provides an analog lateral acceleration output to the stall protection computer (SPC).

05/19/16

System Interface

The FDR system connects with the aircraft systems that follow:

  • DAU 4 of the engine indication and crew alerting system (EICAS)
  • Secondary power-distribution assembly (SPDA)
  • Voice recorder system
  • Stall protection system

Signal Interface

The SSFDR connects to the aircraft's DAU 4 to receive ARINC 717 data. This data is also fed to the optional Quick Access Recorder (QAR).

The accelerometer provides an analog normal acceleration output to DAU 4 for use by the SSFDR and lateral acceleration to stall protection computer (SPC).

The SSFDR sends a discrete signal to DAU 4 for health status. The discrete signal is 28 VDC when normal and ground when failure is detected.

Power Inputs

The SSFDR and 3-axis high-G accelerometer both receive power input from SPDA 2, 28 VDC BUS 2 power. The optional QAR shares the FDR 28 VDC power via JB6.

Overview

System Test

FDR BIT Test

The SSFDR performs a built-in test (BIT) to determine its status upon power-up as well as throughout normal recorder operations. A history of the BIT’s status is stored within the CSMU. A Status discrete signal is sent to the DAU to indicate SSFDR health.

The status discrete will be set for system failures which affect the ability of the SSFDR to record data. This discrete is used to drive the "FDR FAIL" EICAS message.

When the "FDR FAIL" advisory message is displayed on EICAS, a code is logged into the non-volatile memory of the recorder.

ULD Test

The underwater locating device is tested by shorting the water switch contacts and monitoring the transmission with an ultrasonic receiving test set.

Fault Indications

FDR

When the FDR fails and proper electrical power is available, a ground is fed to DAU 4 and a "FDR FAIL" advisory message is displayed on the EICAS page. If the power source is not available, the fail message will be inhibited.

3-Axis High-G Accelerometer

A "FDR ACCEL FAIL" advisory message is displayed on the EICAS display when the aircraft is on the ground, the parking brake is set, and the 3-axis high-G accelerometer is out of limits or there is no signal.
