Require immediate crew awareness and future crew action may be required in the form of alternate system selection or performance limitation. These message are accompanied by flashing master caution and a single chime. Indicate safe or normal system operation which require crew awareness, over and above the dark cockpit philosophy. Indicate minor failures or reduction in systems capability, which require no crew action.

Overview

The nose gear (NLG) gives shock protection to the aircraft when it makes a landing. The NLG, together with the wheels and tires, gives support to the aircraft during ground operation. The nose gear doors give protection to the NLG when it is retracted in the NLG wheel well.

The NLG is electrically started and hydraulically operated. The NLG operates through hydraulic systems No. 2 and No. 3.

Nose Landing Gear (NLG)

The NLG system has two wheels and retracts forward. The NLG is installed in the bottom of the forward fuselage.

The hydraulic actuator retracts and extends the NLG. The hydraulic actuator is installed in the NLG wheel well, above the NLG. If a failure occurs in the landing-gear control system or the hydraulic system, you can extend the NLG with the manual release handle.

The drag brace has an over-center locking mechanism with a hydraulic actuator and two springs which keep it locked. The hydraulic actuator also unlocks the drag brace during retraction. The uplock assembly, holds the NLG in the up and locked position.

The NLG has attachment points to tow the aircraft, and attachment points for the two landing lights.

Nose Gear Door System

The nose gear doors close the opening in the fuselage for the NLG. The doors open out and close in.

The landing-gear electronic-control unit (LGECU) controls the door and the NLG. It opens the NLG forward door when the NLG is operated to extend or retract. The doors open before the gear extends and close after the gear is extended. It also opens before the gear retracts and closes after the gear is retracted.

There is one NLG forward door actuator. The actuator uses two push/pull rods and a torque tube to operate the left and right doors. They are attached to the NLG doors on the right and the left. One tension spring is attached to the left side of the torque tube assembly. The spring gives aid for the doors to open during a manual extension of the gear.

The uplock assembly holds the NLG forward doors in the up and locked position. The forward door actuator is part of the uplock assembly.
