Overview

The purpose of the exterior lighting is as follows:

  • To give the aircraft position and direction in relation to other aircraft
  • To show the areas in front of the aircraft during landing and when the aircraft is taxied
  • To show the external areas of the aircraft to the crew in bad weather or when it is dark

Landing and Taxi Lighting

The landing and taxi lighting system has a landing lighting system and a taxi lighting system that operate independently. The three LANDING switches on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel control the landing lighting system. The TAXI/RECOG switch on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel controls the taxi lighting system.

Navigation Lighting

The navigation lighting system has a primary and a secondary lighting system for the wing-tips and tail. A malfunction of the primary system will cause the secondary system to operate automatically. The NAV switch on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel operates the navigation lighting system.

Strobe Lighting

The strobe lighting has five independent xenon type lights, each with its own power supply. The STROBE and BEACON switches on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel control the strobe lighting.

Power Supplies

There are five power supplies. Each power supply contains a power conversion and energy storage circuit and a timing circuit. The power conversion and energy storage circuit converts the 28 VDC aircraft supply to approximately 400 V to supply the timing circuit. The timing circuit produces trigger pulses at a frequency of approximately 1 Hz to the strobe lights.

Wing Inspection Lighting

The wing-inspection lighting system has two lights. The DC bus 1 supplies power to the wing inspection lighting. The WING INSP switch on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel controls the wing inspection lighting.

Logo Lighting
On A/C Post SB 700-33-001 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Post SB 700-1A11-33-001 for Global 5000

The logo lighting has two lights. The AC power center (ACPC) supplies power to the lights through the APU starter contacter assembly. The LOGO ON/OFF switch on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel controls the lights.

EXTERNAL LIGHTS Control Panel

The EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel contains a plastic control panel with eight toggle switches. When the logo lights are installed, one more toggle switch is installed on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel. It is located on the RH side of the overhead panel in the flight compartment. The EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel controls the systems of the external lighting.
