Overview

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The navigation lights provide a visual indication of the aircraft position and direction to other aircraft in flight. The aircraft is equipped with primary navigation lights (50 watts) and secondary navigation lights (26 watts) for added protection if one system fails. Dual forward navigation lights are installed in each wingtip. The lights on the left wingtip are red while the lights on the right wingtip are green. Dual rear navigation lights are installed at the aft extremity of the aircraft. A primary white light is located on the tail bullet fairing and a secondary white light is located on the tail cone.

The navigation lights are controlled via the failure indicator box located in the avionics compartment (STN520 RHS) in conjunction with the NAV switch located on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel on right of the cockpit overhead panel.

On A/C Post SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on Post SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The LED navigation lighting system consists of three LED lights, one located in each wing tip at the outboard (primary) position and one in the tail at the upper (primary) position. The system uses LEDs as the source of light for enhanced reliability. The NAV switch, on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel, controls the navigation lighting. The control panel is on the right side of the overhead panel in the flight compartment.

Wing Navigation Lights

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The two wing-tip navigation lights in each wing are installed in the same unit. The navigation lights on the left wing are red and those on the right wing are green. They are installed in the recess of the leading edge of the wing-tips. Continuous operation of the wing navigation lights gives the aircraft position and direction relative to other aircraft.

On A/C Post SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Post SB 700-1A11-33-008:

The LED wing navigation lights utilize four LED emitters as the light source. The four LEDs are connected in series. Therefore, if one LED should fail, the whole unit will not function. The LED light output is focused via a reflector assembly to provide the required light distribution performance to meet the navigation light requirements. The red LEDs are utilized within the left hand navigation light unit and green LEDs within the right hand navigation light.

Tail Navigation Lights

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The tail navigation lights are white. The primary tail navigation light is installed at the aft end of the vertical stabilizer. The secondary tail navigation light is installed in the tail strobe light at the end of the tail cone.

The tail navigation lights are white. The tail navigation light extends from the aft end of the vertical stabilizer. The LED tail navigation lights utilize two LED emitters as the light source. The two LEDs are connected in series. Therefore, if one LED should fail, the whole unit will not function. The secondary tail navigation light (tail strobe light) is installed at the end of the tail cone and is electrically disabled.

Failure Indicator Box

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000

The navigation lights are controlled via the failure indicator box located in the avionics compartment (STN 520 RHS) in conjunction with the NAV switch located on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel on the cockpit overhead panel.

The failure indicator box is installed in the main avionics compartment and it is attached to the aircraft structure with four captive screws. The failure indicator box supplies the navigation lights with 28 VDC power and monitors the primary navigation lights for an open or short circuit. If a malfunction occurs, the failure indicator box supplies power to the applicable light in the secondary navigation lighting system.

Voltage Surge Suppressor

On A/C Post SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Post SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000

The voltage surge suppressor is installed in the main avionics compartment. The voltage surge suppressor provides added protection for the power source from lightning-induced over-voltage surges.

System Operation

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

When the NAV switch on the EXTERNAL LIGHTS control panel is selected ON the Failure Indicator Box supplies 28 V from DC Bus 2, SPDA #3 to the navigation lights. On initial power application the failure indicator box will power the secondary navigation lights for 30 seconds before switching power to the primary navigation lights to allow a quick visual inspection for lights serviceability.

The navigation control and indication unit monitors the primary navigation lights for an open or short circuit and will switch to the secondary navigation lights if a malfunction occurs. A thermal switch is installed in series with the primary navigation lights to protect the wingtip lens from an overheat condition on the ground. If an overheat occurs, the thermal switch will open, and the navigation control and indication unit detecting an open circuit in the primary system will switch power to the lower wattage secondary navigation lights.

System Monitoring

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The primary and secondary navigation lights are monitored for open and short circuits during operation. A CAIMS fault page will be provided on the display data page.

System Test

Initiated Built-In Test – CAIMS

On A/C Pre SB 700-33-023 for Global Express/XRS, or on A/C Pre SB 700-1A11-33-008 for Global 5000:

The navigation lights are tested via a NAV LTS switch on the external lights control panel located on the overhead panel. With the switch in the ON position, the failure indicator box powers the secondary navigation lights for 30 seconds. The primary navigation lights are then powered, and remain powered until the switch is turned OFF. Failures of the navigation lights are reported via CAIMS.

Note:
If the primary navigation lights should fail (thermal switch or open circuit) and resume normal operation within 10 minutes, the secondary lights are turned off.

The navigation lights data is displayed in the "Systems Diagnostics/LRU Test" pages on the CAIMS PMAT. The data is real time, meaning that it will display current operating parameters. The navigation lights status (fault) information is displayed as TRUE or FALSE.
