Require immediate crew attention. These messages are accompanied by flashing master warning, triple chime attenson with or without voice message or dedicated tone. Require immediate crew awareness and future crew action may be required in the form of alternate system selection or performance limitation. These message are accompanied by flashing master caution and a single chime. Indicate safe or normal system operation which require crew awareness, over and above the dark cockpit philosophy. Indicate minor failures or reduction in systems capability, which require no crew action.

Overview

The baggage door is found on the left side of the rear fuselage immediately forward of the rear pressure bulkhead. It gives access to the cargo area. It is a plug type door that opens in and moves up on tracks installed in the cargo area. A vent door found at the top of the baggage door opens to release any pressure.

The baggage door is made of an inner and an outer skin made stronger with beams, frames, and intercostals.

Baggage Door Latch Mechanism

The baggage door latch-mechanism holds the baggage door in the closed position. It is installed between the inner and the outer skins of the door structure. Two bolt assemblies extend from the forward and aft edges of the door structure into fittings on the adjacent fuselage frames. Push rod assemblies connect the shoot bolt assemblies to the pivot fitting of the handle. The pivot fitting connects the push rods and the overcenter mechanism to the handle actuator. The overcenter mechanism has a compression spring, a male overcenter lock-assembly, and a female over center lock-assembly. The compression spring holds the latch mechanism in the open or closed position. An outer flush T-handle actuates the bolt assemblies.

A crank assembly connects to the handle. A third pushrod assembly attaches to the crank assembly and the vent door assembly. This pushrod assembly opens and closes the vent door assembly as the handle operates.

Baggage Door Handle

The baggage door handle attaches to the center line of the baggage door. The baggage door handle is made of an outer handle and an inner handle that come as one assembly. The handle housing attaches to the outer skin of the baggage door. The handle connects to the latch mechanism with the handle actuator. When the handle is not locked and the trigger plate is pushed, the outer handle is released from the handle housing. The latch mechanism of the baggage door is released when the outer handle is turned 90 degrees counterclockwise, or the inner handle is turned 90 degrees clockwise. The latch mechanism is latched when the outer or inner handle is turned in the opposite direction. The outer handle goes in the handle housing when it is aligned with the recess and then pushed.

Baggage Door Seal

The baggage door seal is installed around the outer edge of the door. The seal prevents air leakage around the baggage door when the aircraft is pressurized. Pressurized air from the cargo area pushes the seal against the adjacent structure.

Baggage Door Balance Springs

There are two balance springs, which attach to the fuselage structure above the baggage door. Each balance spring has a spring wound to help lift the baggage door. A cable from each balance-spring is attached to the door at a lower roller assembly. The cables wind on pulleys when the door opens and lifts.

Baggage Door Proximity Sensors

There are two proximity sensors. They monitor door closed and locked condition, and provide through the LGECU a visual caution on EICAS (cargo door) to the flight crew, if the door is not fully closed and locked.
