Overview
Each wing tip has one winglet. The winglets are used to decrease wing tip vortices.
The winglet structure is made from ribs, and front and rear spars. The front spar is found between winglet stations WLS5.00 and WLS50.00.The rear spar is made of two channels. The forward channel is found between WLS5.00 and WLS55.00. The aft channel is found between WLS5.00 and WLS33.00. The two spars are made from aluminum alloy plate.
The top and bottom end ribs are at WLS50.00 and WLS2.00. There are also ribs at WLS13.00, WLS22.00 and WLS40.00. All of the ribs are attached with rivets between the front and rear spars. The lower end rib is made of aluminum alloy plate. The remaining ribs and rib parts are made of clad aluminum alloy sheet.
Chem-milled clad-aluminum skins are attached with rivets to the frames on the inboard and outboard sides. An access panel is found on the inboard skin. The winglet leading edge is found between WLS5.00 and WLS50.00 along the winglet front spar. The winglet leading edge can be removed.
The winglet has a trailing edge. It is attached to the aft side of the rear spar and extends from WLS13.00 to WLS50.00. The winglet tip is the permanent fairing that extends from WLS50.00 to WLS60.00. It is attached to the top end rib and the forward channel of the rear spar with rivets. The two trailing edges and winglet tip fairings are made almost fully of graphite lamination.
Winglet Fairing
The winglet fairing is made of graphite lamination. There is a window for the navigation and anti collision lights. The removable components are as follows:
- Forward Fairing
- Middle Fairing
- Aft Fairing
- Access Panel on the wing lower surface
Winglet Attachment Fittings
Two winglet attachment fittings attach the winglet to the wing extension with bolts. One winglet attachment fitting is attached to the front spar, the other is attached to the rear spar of the winglet. The winglet attachment fittings are hand-forged and made from aluminum alloy material.
Winglet Lenses
The winglet lenses are installed above the wing navigation lights in a recess in the leading edge of the wing-tip. The transparent lenses give protection from the elements to the navigation lights.
