Require immediate crew attention. These messages are accompanied by flashing master warning, triple chime attenson with or without voice message or dedicated tone. Require immediate crew awareness and future crew action may be required in the form of alternate system selection or performance limitation. These message are accompanied by flashing master caution and a single chime. Indicate safe or normal system operation which require crew awareness, over and above the dark cockpit philosophy. Indicate minor failures or reduction in systems capability, which require no crew action.

Fault Description:

Radio Frequency Unit (RFU) Coaxial Cable to Attenuator or from Attenuator to High Power Amplifier (HPA) is considered disconnected. For the MCS-7000 installation, the RFU is not external to the Satellite Data Unit (SDU).

Possible Causes:

  • Satellite Data Unit (SDU) (A228)
  • Radio Frequency Unit (RFU) (A240)
  • Radio Frequency (RF) Attenuator (A231)
  • High Power Amplifier (HPA) (A229)
  • Coaxial Cable
  • Associated Wiring

Troubleshooting Recommendations:

  1. Disconnect SDU connector A228CP1 and RFU connector A240CP1. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A228CP1-12 Ground
    A228CP1-12 Shield

    1. If there is continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is no continuity, continue with next step.

  2. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A228CP1-12 A240CP1-12

    1. If there is no continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is continuity, continue with next step.

  3. Reconnect what was disconnected in the previous step. Disconnect RFU connector A240BP1 and RF Attenuator connector A231P1. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A240BP1-71 Ground
    A240BP1-71 Shield

    1. If there is continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is no continuity, continue with next step.

  4. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A240BP1-71 A231P1-1

    1. If there is no continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is continuity, continue with next step.

  5. Reconnect what was disconnected in the previous step. Disconnect RF Attenuator connector A231P2 and HPA connector A229AP1. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A231P2-1 Ground
    A231P2-1 Shield

    1. If there is continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is no continuity, continue with next step.

  6. Perform a continuity check as follows:

    From To Result
    A231P2-1 A229AP1-71

    1. If there is no continuity, repair defective coaxial cable as required and do close out.
    2. If there is continuity, continue with next step.

  7. A Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) may also be used to check the integrity of the coaxial cable.

    1. If defects are found, repair as required and do close out.
    2. If no defects are found, continue with next step

  8. Replace the RF Attenuator. Is the fault still present?

    1. If NO, do close out.
    2. If YES, continue with next step.

  9. Replace the RFU. Is the fault still present?

    1. If NO, do close out.
    2. If YES, continue with next step.

  10. Replace the HPA. Is the fault still present?

    1. If NO, do close out.
    2. If YES, continue with next step.

  11. Replace the SDU.
  12. Do close out.
