Fault Description:
The Satellite Data Unit (SDU) cannot transmit signals or transmits invalid signals to the High Power Amplifier (HPA) or the signals transmitted by the SDU to the HPA do not have the necessary properties for correct system operation.
Possible Causes:
- Coaxial Cable
- Satellite Data Unit (SDU) (A228)
- Radio Frequency Unit (RFU) (A240)
- Radio Frequency Attenuator (A231)
- High Power Amplifier (HPA) (A229)
- Associated Wiring

Troubleshooting Recommendations:
- Disconnect SDU connector A228CP1 and RFU connector A240CP1. Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A228CP1-12 Ground A228CP1-12 Shield - If there is continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is no continuity, continue with next step.
- Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A228CP1-12 A240CP1-12 - If there is no continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is continuity, continue with next step.
- Reconnect what was disconnected in the previous step. Disconnect RFU connector A240BP1 and RF Attenuator connector A231P1. Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A240BP1-71 Ground A240BP1-71 Shield - If there is continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is no continuity, continue with next step.
- Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A240BP1-71 A231P1-1 - If there is no continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is continuity, continue with next step.
- Reconnect what was disconnected in the previous step. Disconnect RF Attenuator connector A231P2 and HPA connector A229AP1. Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A231P2-1 Ground A231P2-1 Shield - If there is continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is no continuity, continue with next step.
- Perform a continuity check as follows:
From To Result A231P2-1 A229AP1-71 - If there is no continuity, repair defective co-axial cable as required and do close out.
- If there is continuity, continue with next step.
- A Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) may also be used to check the integrity of the co-axial cable.
- If defects are found, repair as required and do close out.
- If no defects are found, continue with next step.
- Replace the RF Attenuator. Is the fault still present?
- If NO, do close out.
- If YES, continue with next step.
- Replace the RFU. Is the fault still present?
- If NO, do close out.
- If YES, continue with next step.
- Replace the HPA. Is the fault still present?
- If NO, do close out.
- If YES, continue with next step.
- Replace the SDU.
- Do close out.
