Message Overview:

FDR FAIL
(Advisory)

DDG Reference: 31-31-01
Pilot Action (QRH): ADVISORY 13-2
System Description: 31-31-00
Schematic Diagram: 31-31-00 [ Global Express ]  [ G5000 ]  [ Global XRS ]
Wiring Diagram: 31-31-01 [ Global Express ]  [ G5000 ]  [ Global XRS ]

Fault Description:

FDR system does not operate correctly.

Possible Causes:

  • Flight Data Recorder (FDR) (A39)
  • Secondary-Power Distribution Assembly (SPDA) 2 (A14)
  • Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) 4 (A31)
  • Junction Box (JB) 6
  • Associated Wiring

Troubleshooting Tips:

Advisory Wire/Service Bulletin: None

Forum Articles/Infoservice/Newsletter: None

When the APU is only powering the A/C DAU 4 will not send data through the A717 to the FDR (for ground test procedures AMM TASK 31-31-00-710-801 and AMM TASK 31-32-00-710-801 external power source or engine ON should be used to carry out FDR functional tests) and the FDR FAIL advisory message is displayed.

Troubleshooting Recommendations:

  1. If the FDR FAIL is on after pressing the PEM button and the aircraft electrical system is only being powered by the APU, you need to disconnect the APU from the AC bus and use an electrical power cart or start the LH engine.

    1. When selecting OFF the APU AC power source and selecting the external power source the FDR FAIL should clear. Then you can continue with the FDR ground test.
    2. If the FDR FAIL is still illuminated then shut down aircraft power and reboot the aircraft. Reapply power to the aircraft using the external power cart or engine start. If FDR illuminates again after pressing the PEM then continue with the below steps.

  2. Swap SPDAs.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  3. Swap DAUs.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  4. Perform wiring checks between SPDA2, DAU4, JB6, and FDR. Repair as required.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  5. Replace FDR.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  6. Replace JB6.
  7. Do close out.
