Message Description:

There is a failure of the Nose Wheel Steering control system.

Possible Causes:

  • Steering Control Handwheel (MT2)
  • Steering Pressure Switch (S2)
  • Landing Gear Selector Valve 3 (L17)
  • Rudder Control RVDT (MT219)
  • Steering Solenoid Valve (SSV) (L1)
  • Electro-Hydraulic Servo Valve (EHSV) (L12)
  • Steering Actuator Feedback Position LVDT (MT16)
  • Steering Actuator Feedback Position LVDT (MT17)
  • Nose Wheel Steering System Rigging Fault
  • Steering Control Unit (SCU) (A36)
  • Associated Wiring

Troubleshooting Tips:

Advisory Wire/Service Bulletin:

Troubleshooting Recommendations:

NOTE: Check Nose Wheel Steering Rigging Status for Proximity Sensor faults prior to performing Troubleshooting Recommendations.

NOTE: The NOSE STEER SWITCH in the cockpit has multiple contacts. A failed contact set could cause the system to indicate a fault. The NOSE STEER FAIL CAS message could be accompanied with '-' displayed on the SCU seven segment display. See step 3 for a continuity check on the switch contacts.

  1. Access CAIMS Active Faults.
  2. Select related CAIMS message below.
  3. Remove the Landing Gear Control Panel (AP22). Perform a continuity check directly on the NOSE STEER switch contacts as follows:
NOSE STEER SWITCH in the 'OFF' position

    From To Expected Result Result
1C 1NC (No wire connected) Continuity
    1C 1NO Open
    2C 2NC(No wire connected) Continuity
    2C 2NO Open
    3C (Unused) 3NC (Unused) Open
    3C (Unused) 3NO (Unused) Continuity
    4C 4NC(No wire connected) Open
    4C 4NO Continuity

NOSE STEER SWITCH in the 'ARM' position

    From To Expected Result Result
1C 1NC (No wire connected) Open
    1C 1NO Continuity
    2C 2NC(No wire connected) Open
    2C 2NO Continuity
    3C (Unused) 3NC (Unused) Continuity
    3C (Unused) 3NO (Unused) Open
    4C 4NC(No wire connected) Continuity
    4C 4NO Open

    1. If the continuity check results agree with the tables above, continue with next step
    2. If the continuity check results do not agree with the tables above, replace the NOSE STEER Switch

  4. If there is no CAIMS message available please follow the 'Troubleshooting Recommendations' steps on the 'GEAR DISAGREE' page.
