Fault Description:

One of the conditions that follow occurs:

  • There is an asymmetry condition detected in the slat system
  • The difference between the Right and Left Slat position is more than 16 resolver degrees

Possible Causes:

  • Left Slat Resolver (MT77)
  • Right Slat Resolver (MT78)
  • Slat/Flap Control Unit (SFCU) 1 (A124)
  • Slat/Flap Control Unit (SFCU) 2 (A95)
  • Associated Wiring

Performing a SLAT FLAP RESET on the EMS CDU may clear this fault.

NOTE: Wait at least one minute after SFCU reset to allow self test to run.

Moving the SFCL to another detent may also clear this fault. Performing the clear latched fault may also clear this fault. The latched fault can be cleared by doing the AMM 27-51-05-910-801 "Clear Slat/Flap Control Unit (SFCU) Latched Faults".

The resolver can be monitored in the CAIMS system diagnostic:

  1. SYSTEM DIAG
  2. 27-00 FLIGHT CONTROLS
  3. SLAT/FLAP CONTROL UNIT #1(2)
  4. LRU TEST
  5. SLAT/FLAP POSITION - RAW DATA - SFCU1(2)
  6. CONFIRM

Troubleshooting Recommendations:

  1. Confirm that both SFCUs are reporting the "slat mechanical disconnect" in CAIMS.

    1. If both SFCUs are reporting, go to step 3.
    2. If only one SFCU is reporting, continue with next step.

  2. Perform the electrical rigging of the slats on the SFCU that was reporting the fault.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains (coming back on the next selection), go to step 14.

  3. Monitor the slats resolvers in CAIMS and confirm that the left and right resolvers on both SFCUs are reporting the same position.

    1. If the left and right resolvers are reporting a different position on both SFCU, go to step 7.
    2. If all the resolvers are reporting the same position, continue with next step.
      NOTE: The resolvers can have 1 degree different in the reading.

  4. Clear the latched fault in CAIMS, cycle the slats to OUT back to IN.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  5. Perform a visual check to make sure there is no real mechanical disconnect of the slats.

    1. If there is no disconnect, go to step 14.
    2. If there is disconnect, continue with next step.

  6. Repair mechanical disconnect and run rigging.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, go to step 14.

  7. Perform an inspection of the slat system torque tubes and angle gearboxes.

    1. If inspection is good, go to step 9.
    2. If anomalies are found, continue with next step.
      NOTE: Many issues were reported related to mechanical disconnect fault were the torques tubes connected close to the Power drive unit were not installed properly the last time after the slats were rigged.

  8. Repair defects and run rigging.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  9. If no asymmetry is found between the left and right slats surfaces, manual retract the slats to IN as per the procedure that follow and replace the slat resolver not reporting 0 degree on the slat rigging page.

    5. SLAT RIGGING - SFCU1(2)
    6. CONFIRM
    7. Highlight "SLAT RIG ENABLE COMMAND" and Select
    8. Highlight "RELEASE L SLAT ABRAKE" and Select
    9. Highlight "RELEASE R SLAT ABRAKE" and Select
    10. Highlight "RELEASE SLAT MOTOR BRAKE" and Select
    11. Manually turn the torques tubes near the slat power drive unit until the slats are fully retracted.
    12. Highlight "ENGAGE L SLAT ABRAKE" and Select
    13. Highlight "ENGAGE R SLAT ABRAKE" and Select
    14. Highlight "ENGAGE SLAT MOTOR BRAKE" and Select
    15. CONFIRM
    16. CONFIRM
    17. TEST CMPLT
      NOTE: The procedure has to be completed to allow the SFCU going out of the maintenance mode. If these steps are not followed, the resolvers will be reporting around 20 degrees.
    18. SLAT RIGGING - SFCU1(2)
    19. CONFIRM
    20. Record the resolver position and replace the slat resolver not reporting 0 degree

  10. Perform the rigging of slats if both resolver are reporting 0 degree on the slat rigging page with the slats IN.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains (coming back at the same position), continue with next step.

  11. Swap SFCUs.

    1. If system checks are good, replace defective SFCU and do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  12. Perform wiring checks between the applicable SFCU rack and Slat resolvers.

    1. If wiring checks are not good, repair defective wiring as required and do close out.
    2. If wiring checks are good, continue with next step.

  13. Replace defective resolvers.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  14. Download both SFCUs NVMs and send to AC YUL.
  15. Do close out.
