These message are accompanied by flashing master caution and a single chime. Indicate safe or normal system operation which require crew awareness, over and above the dark cockpit philosophy. Indicate minor failures or reduction in systems capability, which require no crew action.

Fault Description:

The internal Inertial Reference Unit (IRU) temperature is higher than the maximum permitted limit (approximately 72°C).

Possible Causes:

  • Inertial Reference System (IRS) 3 Cooling Fan
  • Inertial Reference System (IRS) 3 Cooling Fan Filter
  • Inertial Reference Unit (IRU) 3 (A34)

Troubleshooting Recommendations:

  1. Replace IRU 3 cooling fan.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  2. Perform a visual inspection of the fan filter for Pull the tab on the filter, remove the filter from the fan and visually inspect the filter.

    1. If the filter shows sign of degradation, proceed with the replacement of the cooling fan filter and do close out.
    2. If the filter is dirty, continue with next step.

  3. Proceed with the cleaning as follows:

    • Vacuum the filter using a standard commercial vacuum cleaner or clean the filter using compressed air at a pressure not exceeding 30 psi
    • Wash the filter in a mild detergent solution and rinse with water. Temperature of the detergent solution or water shall not exceed 140°F. Chlorine solutions should not be used. Allow the filter to dry and reinstall
    • Allow the filter to dry and reinstall
      NOTE: If during the cleaning procedure the filter shows signs of degradation, proceed with the replacement of the filter.

    1. If system checks are good, do close out.
    2. If fault remains, continue with next step.

  4. Replace IRU 3.
  5. Do close out.
